Segun, Son of Yoruba Political Icon, J.S. Olawoyin Declares For Senate

Hon Olusegun Olawoyin, a Barrister at law, son of Offa strongman and Yoruba icon, Chief J.S Olawoyin has launched his ambition to serve his people in the Red Chamber.

Olawoyin, a Barrister at Law and former Chairman, Offa Local Governments, launched his senate bid, Saturday, 5 February 2022 on his his late father’s posthumous birthday.

Friends, loyalists and supporters converged at the late Chief J.S Olawoyin’s residence in Offa, Kwara state to attend the event and it was encomiums , chronicling of avalanche of good deeds and how he has over the years impacted people’s lives.

‘Akinrogun, Chief Segun Olawoyin has been described as a quiet and an easy-going man who has impacted greatly in his constituency.

In his declaration message, Olawoyin said:

‘I am Chief Olusegun Oluwatoyin Olawoyin and Iam here to make it known that Iam ready to offer myself in service to the good people of Kwara South Senatorial District. I wish to begin the journey as expected by seeking the PDP senatorial nomination.

It is for this reason that I come forward to make my intention known to all. I am interested in becoming a member of the Nigerian Senate to represent the Kwara South Senatorial district’ he said while the audience greeted this with a thunderous applause.

The former LG boss also talked about his plans for the senatorial district if elected as a senator.

‘With your support I am set to introduce legislative agenda that is specific, measurable, achievable, reliable, people -oriented and practicable.

Lawmaking has taken a different dimension and only those with the requisite skills, aptitude should represent us in the Red Chambers.

I have been an integral part of the system and I am well aware of the agonies of our people.

My focus when chosen by God and the people and, I finally win the election, is to use my exposure in the public service over the years as well as extensive networking to highlight these needs to the appropriate authorities. I also desire to propose bills that will add value to our people through creative policies’ he said.

Responding to a reporter’s question asking if he had gained needed experience to represent the Kwara South in the senate, Olawoyin submitted that he has not only gotten requisite experience to provide qualitative representation.

‘I began to get involved in politics during my University days and I was the President of Kwara State students.

I joined the PDP in 2002 ahead of the 2003 General election which had Dr Bukola Saraki wining the Kwara state gubernatorial election . Shortly after, I emerged as PDP vice chairmanship candidate in Offa local government for the local government elections.

Our party recorded victory and I was the vice chairman under Alhaji Tajudeen Folaranmi Aro until my appointment as state cabinet member in 2006 and I served as Commissioner for Environment, Tourism and Forestry.

I later got nominated as Offa local government chairmanship candidate by the PDP in 2007.

Our party won and I served as Chairman , Offa local government between 2007 and 2010.
Working together with my team, we were able to do a lot in respect of impacting the lives of our people including road and electrification projects .

Also, we built schools and renovated classrooms. We did 13 roads while about 149 classrooms were renovated.
About 34 bore holes were sunk and 49 others were repaired at different locations.
My administration also constructed the DPO quarters in GRA, Offa.

The welfare of the staff was a top priority on my watch actually as at the time I was leaving in November 2007, I had paid a month leave bonus in advance.

I received a lot of awards for my performance including the Best Chairman award by NTA 2 .

I was the state Youth Leader of my party between 2013 and 2015.
I am a legal practitioner , and presently I am with Bayo Ojo & co as an Associate, while in Lagos ,I had at different times worked at Ayanlaja, Adesanya and co, and Ayo Olanrewaju & co Ikeja.

I am Kwara Diocese of the African Church’s Legal Adviser ditto my parish .

In appreciation of my community service efforts , the Olofa of Offa honoured me with the chieftaincy title of Akinrogun of Offa in 2009.

These experiences have shown to me first- hand those things that form the basic needs of the people. These are in the sectors of Agriculture, Security, Road, Education, Health, Water and Human Capital Development’ he said.

Attending the event were top dignitaries who attested to Olawoyin’s high sense of integrity, trustworthiness, dependability and development.
According to them, his tenure as local government chairman ushered in tremendous development and progress that the people are still reaping from.
